Radiant Neon Blog Hop

Stampendous and Imagine Crafts Header

I’ve created an exciting Art Journal for my project in the  IMAGINE Crafts and Stampendous Blog Hop this week.  My project incorporated Radiant Neon inks from IMAGINE Crafts with Stampendous Nathalie Kalbach and Mixed Media Stamps, along with the Stack Art Kit accentuated with Frantage Fragments in coordinating neon colors.

I had no agenda when I started out with this book except for the supplies that I was going to use – this book just evolved as it went along, a true artist journal that I’m very excited about filling up.  And yes, the spine of the book is actually peyote beaded with cube beads, complete with fringe on the sides.  But the beadwork is a complete separate tutorial LOL

Here’s the book that I used to create my Art Journal, which measures approximately 10˝ square.  I started by sanding the entire cover of the book to get rid of the glossy finish.  I then applied to layers of gesso over the entire cover, working in a cross hatch pattern to add some texture while adding layers.  Once dry, I used a Sponge Dauber to apply (think highlights) Electric Coral.  Use a heat tool to set the Radiant Neon ink since it is pigment ink and if not dried completely will blend into the gesso on the next layers.  I repeated this process of applying a coat of gesso with Radiant Neon inks in the following order – gesso and Electric Orange, gesso and Electric Yellow, finishing with a coat of Electric Yellow.  Allow to dry completely.

With the prep work done, the real fun with inks began!  I started by using the ink splotch template enclosed with the  NK Studio Grunge Cling Rubber Stamps set and using Electric Green ink applied the ink through the stencil onto the cover.  I then flipped the stencil 180º and added more ink, concentrating the ink along the edges of the stencil so the edges would be darker.

I then addend more stamps to the book cover with Electric Blue and Electric Purple inks with stamps from the NK Studio Wired Cling and Grunge Cling Stamps along with the Mixed Media Cling Rubber Brush Strokes set.

Using Memento Luxe Tuxedo Black, I stamped the Follow Your Art stamp in the lower right hand corner, then sprinkled black embossing powder onto the cover of the book.  Because the Radiant Neon inks weren’t completely dried, the black embossing powder also clung to different areas of the book cover.  I heat set the embossing powder and then allowed to cool down.

Because I love texture sprays, I decided that the irRESISTibles would be the perfect addition to the cover of this book.  I began by misting the cover with irRESISTible in Dandelion and Tangelo since they are close to the Radiant Neon colors.  Be sure to allow the irRESISTible to dry completely.  With the stencil found in the Wired Cling stamp set, I masked the rest of the book cover with paper towels and then sprayed the irRESISTible Bahama Blue.  I let the cover of the book dry while working on the Stack Art embellishment.

Using the large tag from the Stack Art Royal Heart set, paint a couple of coats of gesso onto the tag.  With a Sponge Dauber, apply Electric Green ink over the entire tag and blend.  Lay the circle stencil onto the tag and use the Sponge Dauber to generously apply more Electric Green ink darker than the base layer.  From the Stack Art kit, stamp the diamond pattern with Electric Blue onto the tag, followed with the text stamp inked with Electric Purple.  Heat set the entire tag with clear embossing powder.

For added texture and a little more color, I began to add the Frantage Fragments onto the Stack Art Kit. Along the edge of the large tag I applied adhesive and then added the Hot Orange Fragments.  The shield piece is covered with Hot Blue, with the crown being adorned with the Hot Lime and the heart with Hot Pink.  I used the enclosed die cut adhesive to hold all the chipboard pieces together.  If you haven’t used the Fragments before, remember that you can crush the pieces down smaller (with just your fingers!) to fill in the gaps when covering large areas.

To finish the book, I added the completed Stack Art embellishment to the cover of the book.  As shown earlier, I adhered the beaded spine to the book and finished things off with ribbons and fibers.  Now I can’t wait to fill my Art Journal with some amazing projects!
