As many of you know, I recently joined the Spellbinders’ Mixed Media Team this past August – and I’m proud to be able to FINALLY share publicly my first project I created since joining the Team.  An overview of this project was posted today on the Spellbinders’ Idea Gallery but I’m including a more in depth view with instructions here.

Hiding inside of the box is this metal flower that was die cut using a Spellbinders die, colored with StazOn and then attached to a hat pin.  This is mounted on this multi media base composed of die cut metal, a bezel finished with ICED Enamels, and the flower stem is pulled through a vintage button that I found at a salvage sale.  To be honest I don’t which eye candy I enjoy more- the inside, or the outside of the box!

Instructions for Outside of Box

Triangle Bezels:

Following manufacturer’s instructions, use Iced Enamels Medium with Iced Enamels Relique to color the outside of the Triangles One bezels.

Cut printed papers with the Media Mixáge™ Triangles One dies #3 (one for each bezel) with the Grand Calibur® machine.

Apply IMAGINE Crafts® GlazOn™ layer protectant with and InkBlusher to seal both sides and edges of the cut triangle pieces of paper.

Adhere sealed pieces of paper into the bottom of the bezels, then add ephermera and other found objects into the bezel.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, fill each bezel with Ice Resin® and allow to fully cure.   NOTE: It is easiest to adhere the bezels to the outside of the box once the interior has been fully completed (below).

Corrugated Box:

Use one of the bezels as your template to create the shape of the box.

Trace template onto the backside of the corrugated paper and cut box.

To add a slight color and shimmer to the corrugated paper, mist with IMAGINE Crafts® Fireworks™ craft spray in Summer Sky, Bamboo Leaves, and Rich Cocoa.

Box Topper:

Cut four triangles from one sheet of Media Mixáge™ Aluminum metal sheets using the Artisan Explorer™ Metal Shim plate with the Media Mixáge™ Triangles One dies #3 (one for each bezel) with the Grand Calibur® machine.

Emboss all four metal triangle pieces with Media Mixáge™ Granite Works One texture plate through the Grand Calibur® machine.

Create a small pyramid using a piece of cardstock and then adhere the embossed metal triangles onto each side.

Lightly color the pyramid with StazOn® Timber Brown and allow to dry.

Instructions for Inside of Box

Box Base (corrugated):

Reinforce the box at the folding points of the box at the base of the triangles with bookbinder’s (linen) tape.

Adhere printed papers   to the corrugated paper, trimming with the edge of the triangle with enough excess paper to cover the folding points of the box.

Repeat for all four points of the box. NOTE: If using a random patterned paper where the orientation of the paper is not a factor you can cover the entire inside of the box at one time.

BloomingBezels7

Inside Flaps:  There are two layers of “flaps” surrounding the inside bezel of the box, both are cut with Media Mixáge™ Triangles One dies through the Artisan X-plorer™ machine.

The largest flap uses the #3 Triangle One die.  Fold your piece of paper and then line the die up so that the bottom edge is below the fold line so that it does not cut the paper.  When placing the die and paper down on cutting plate, the excess paper should be hanging completely off the edge of the cutting plate.  Once cut, the two diagonal sides of the triangle will be cut with the base of the triangle being the fold.

Cut   at least 1/2˝ excess at the end of the triangle.

Repeat three more times for this size.

For the smaller, second layer use the #2 Triangle One die and repeat the same steps.

Once all flap pieces have been cut, adhere them to the square base of the box, lining up the fold marks and centering the pieces.  Glue down the #3 size triangles to the base first, then layer the #2 triangle pieces on top.

Add embellishments as desired.

Inside Base:

Cut one piece of patterned paper using the #5 Classic Squares Large die and adhere to the base of the box, covering the flap pieces.

Cut one medallion from a piece of Media Mixáge™ Aluminum metal sheets using the Artisan Explorer™ Metal Shim plate with the Medallion Four die through the Grand Calibur® machine.

Color the cut medallion with StazOn® Timber Brown; allow to dry completely before adhering onto the square paper.

Following manufacturer’s instructions, use Iced Enamels Medium with Iced Enamels Relique to color the inside and outside edges of the Squares One bezel; affix to the middle of the metal medallion.

Metal Flower:

Following manufacturer’s instructions, use Iced Enamels Medium with Iced Enamels Relique to color the back and outside edges of Media Mixáge™ Circle Hatpins.

Cut one flower from a piece of Media Mixáge™ Aluminum metal sheets using the Artisan Explorer™ Metal Shim plate with the Spiral Blossom Four die through the Grand Calibur® machine.

Use an InkBlusher to color the metal with StazOn® Timber Brown; allow to dry.

Using a pencil, wrap the cut metal flower around the pencil starting with the end on the outside of the spiral working inward.

Bend the metal at the end (middle) of the spiral to create the base and then attach to the inside of the hatpin.

Pass the end of the hatpin through the decorative button to desired length and fold excess wire to the underside of the button; adhere inside of the square bezel.

Finishing the Box: Once the interior of the box has been completed, adhere the four triangular bezels to the outside of the box to complete the project.
